Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is the latest advancement in imaging technology. OCT uses light waves (instead of sound waves like an ultrasound) to take colour-coded cross-sectional images of your central retina (macula) and retinal nerve fiber layer.
The 3D images allow your optometrist to visualize specific retinal layers and measure tissue thickness, which goes beyond what we can see and do during your regular eye exam. With repeated images your optometrist can detect any subtle changes over time which aids in early detection of many eye conditions, especially glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
